Husbandry & Captive Breeding of a Documented Nicaragua Bloodline
Introduction
Drymobius margaritiferus is a medium-sized, diurnal colubrid native to Central America. Its distribution ranges from southern Mexico through Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica to Panama and parts of northern Colombia.
Although the species is not considered rare within its natural range, it remains uncommon in herpetoculture and has only rarely been bred successfully in captivity. Consequently, practical husbandry information and breeding reports are still very limited.
As only a few publications dealing with the husbandry and captive breeding of this species are currently available, this report is primarily based on my own long-term observations of a documented bloodline originating from Nicaragua. All information presented here reflects my personal experience and is intended to provide practical guidance for other keepers interested in maintaining and breeding this remarkable species.
My Breeding Project
Origin of the animals: Nicaragua

The objective of this breeding project is the long-term maintenance of a healthy, genetically traceable bloodline while documenting biological, behavioral, and reproductive observations as comprehensively as possible.
Enclosure
Adult animals are maintained in PVC enclosures measuring 90 × 40 × 60 cm.
Each enclosure contains:
- Cork tubes
- Cork bark
- Multiple hiding places
- A few climbing branches
- Water bowl
- Natural forest soil as substrate
Although Drymobius margaritiferus is fully capable of climbing, my observations indicate that it is primarily a terrestrial species. Elevated branches are used only occasionally, while the animals spend most of their time on the ground or hidden inside ground-level shelters.

Enclosure: PVC enclosure (ProCages), 90 × 40 × 60 cm
Lighting: 12-hour photoperiod
UV lighting: T5 UVA/UVB, 24 W
Heating: Heat panel
Thermostat: Biotherm
Misting system: Once or twice daily for 45–60 seconds, depending on the season
Ventilation: Two miniature circulation fans
Substrate: Natural forest soil
Environmental Conditions
The following environmental parameters have proven successful in my collection:
- Daytime temperature: 28–30 °C
- Nighttime temperature: 21–23 °C
- Relative humidity: 60–80%
- Daily misting
- Excellent ventilation
Relative humidity rises considerably immediately after misting before gradually decreasing as a result of the enclosure's ventilation.
Permanently high humidity has not produced satisfactory results in my collection. While temporary periods of elevated humidity are well tolerated, continuously damp conditions resulted in skin problems in some animals. Therefore, I allow the enclosure to dry completely between misting cycles.
Behavior
Drymobius margaritiferus is an exceptionally alert and nervous species.
Contrary to the common assumption that this is a highly active and constantly visible snake, my animals are remarkably secretive. Outside feeding periods and the breeding season, they often remain hidden for several consecutive days. Most of their time is spent concealed inside cork tubes or other shelters.
However, their behavior changes immediately when someone approaches the enclosure. Even slight movements outside the enclosure are quickly detected.
One of the most striking characteristics of this species is its defensive behavior. While many colubrids attempt to flee when disturbed, some individuals react aggressively by lunging forward at remarkable speed and repeatedly attempting to bite instead of retreating.
This behavior should always be taken into account when opening the enclosure.
Feeding
Reliable information regarding the natural diet of wild Drymobius margaritiferus remains limited. Available observations suggest that amphibians and various lizard species represent the primary prey.
Juveniles
Hatchlings are initially raised exclusively on Mourning Geckos (Lepidodactylus lugubris).
Accepted prey items include:
- Live geckos
- Freshly euthanized geckos
- Occasionally small live frogs
No alternative food items have been accepted consistently.
Subadults and Adults
As the animals mature, their feeding behavior changes considerably.
All subadult and adult specimens in my collection readily accept appropriately sized rodents. Consequently, maintaining adult animals is significantly less demanding than raising hatchlings.
Reproduction
Following a slight seasonal cooling period, breeding activity begins reliably.
Beginning of the breeding season: In my collection, the main breeding season starts in November. Nevertheless, mating attempts by males have also been observed during the summer months.
Healthy females are capable of producing several clutches within a single year.
In my collection, clutch size generally ranges from 2 to 6 eggs.
Incubation
Incubation medium: Eggs placed on perlite or on a grid positioned above moist perlite.
Incubation temperature: 28.0–28.5 °C
Incubation period: 48–58 days
Most hatchlings emerged around day 52.
A temperature difference of approximately 1 °C noticeably prolonged the incubation period.
Raising the Hatchlings
Hatchlings emerge weighing approximately 3.5–5.7 g.
Following their first shed, they usually begin feeding readily on geckos.
For raising hatchlings, I use small, well-structured terrariums (e.g. Exo Terra 30 × 30 × 30 cm) providing excellent ventilation and multiple hiding places.
Personal Observations
During the course of this breeding project, I made several observations that differ in part from the limited information currently available.
- The species is predominantly terrestrial.
- Elevated perches are used only occasionally.
- Animals spend most of their time hidden.
- Outside feeding and breeding periods they often remain out of sight for several consecutive days.
- Even slight movements outside the enclosure are immediately detected.
- Some individuals display pronounced defensive behavior and actively attempt to bite.
- Permanently high humidity may promote skin problems.
- Hatchlings initially require lizards as prey.
- Subadult and adult animals readily accept rodents.
- Healthy females are capable of producing multiple clutches per year.
- Incubation at approximately 28.5 °C has produced the most consistent results in my breeding project.

Conclusion
Drymobius margaritiferus is, in my opinion, one of the most fascinating Central American colubrids. Despite its rarity in herpetoculture, the species can be maintained and bred successfully under appropriate husbandry conditions.
Many of the observations presented in this report differ from the limited information currently available and are based exclusively on my experience with a documented Nicaragua bloodline. I hope that these observations will contribute to a better understanding of this remarkable species and provide practical guidance for future keepers and breeders.
Breedingplan 2025–2026
The first planned breeding season was based on the following schedule:
- Potential pairing: October 5, 2025
- Expected egg deposition: January 11, 2026 (projected)
During this phase, the animals already exhibited consistent feeding behavior and normal activity levels.
Breeding Progress 2026 – Clutch 1
The pre-oviposition shed was observed on January 6–7.
Feeding behavior remained consistently stable until shortly before egg deposition.
On the day before oviposition, the female showed a significant increase in restlessness, as well as aggressive and searching behavior.
Egg Deposition (Clutch 1)
Egg deposition began in the early morning hours at approximately 05:00 AM.
The first egg was removed at approximately 06:30 AM.

- Condition: 1 egg fertile, 2 eggs presumed infertile
- Consistency: One egg with normal texture, two eggs soft / slimy
- Development: Only one egg developed successfully to full term
Incubation & Hatching (Clutch 1)
- The fertile egg was incubated at 28.5 °C.
- From day 49: Visible loss of egg volume
- Hatching: Day 51

- Weight: 5.7 g
- Development: Successful hatch with complete development of one offspring
Breeding Progress 2026 – Further Reproductive Cycles
Clutch 2
On March 19, 2026, a renewed mating phase (PLS) was documented.
On the same day, from approximately 10:30 AM, the female already displayed calm, partially concealed behavior within the egg-laying area.

The egg deposition proceeded calmly and without any escape behavior.
Compared to her usual behavior, the female displayed an unusually calm phase throughout the egg-laying process.

- Incubation period: Approximately 51–52 days
- Hatching date: May 9, 2026
- Hatching success: 5 out of 6 hatchlings
Even the smallest eggs developed completely and hatched successfully.

- Weight: Approximately 2 g
- Feeding response: Independent feeding (small geckos)
- Progress: Increasing losses after 5–6 weeks

Mating occurred on the evening of April 23, 2026.
On the morning of April 24, the female once again showed restlessness and active searching behavior for a suitable egg-laying site.
Egg deposition began at approximately 08:30 AM and lasted around 2.5–3 hours.
The female remained remarkably calm throughout the entire process.

- First hatchlings: June 10, 2026 (Day 48)

All hatchlings emerged within a short time frame.

The fourth clutch was laid on May 27, 2026, approximately 33 days after the previous clutch.
The same egg-laying site was used again.
Two eggs showed a yellowish discoloration and a slight network-like structure, indicating possible infertility.
Incubation
- Initial incubation temperature: 28 °C
- Later phase: 26.5–27 °C (separated eggs)
- Average: 27,5 °C
End of Incubation
After approximately three weeks, the two infertile eggs were removed from the incubator.
Around two weeks before the expected hatch date, the two remaining eggs began to lose a significant amount of volume. One of them also developed mold and felt unusually hard to the touch. After opening the egg, I found a partially developed hatchling inside. Based on its stage of development, I estimate that it had died one to two weeks earlier.
The final hatchling emerged on July 22, 2026, after an incubation period of 58 days. Compared to my previous clutches, an incubation temperature approximately 1 °C lower increased the incubation period by about six days.
With a hatch weight of
3.46 g, this hatchling is one of the smallest produced this season. The coming weeks will reveal how it develops. Based on my observations so far, however, I currently prefer incubation temperatures of
28.5 °C or slightly higher, as the third clutch produced what I consider to be the strongest, healthiest, and overall highest-quality hatchlings.

Husbandry Data
Raaising Juveniles
The hatchlings display a highly shy but species-typical behavior.
They are active, but immediately retreat when the terrarium is approached or opened.
Rearing Conditions
- Terrarium size: Exo Terra 30 × 30 cm
- Climate: Similar to adult conditions, with slight adjustments
- Setup: Highly structured environment with numerous hiding places
Feeding
Preferred food during the first weeks:
- Small geckos (offered live or pre-killed)
Not accepted during the first 4–7 weeks:
- Insects
- Fish
- Chicken heart
- Mice
- Pieces of frog
Development
- First shed: 7–12 days after hatching
- Further sheds: Approximately every 30 days
- First feeding response: Immediately after the first shed
Additional Observation (2025)
A captive-bred juvenile from Poland (Hamm) showed an extreme stress response during routine maintenance (substrate change) and subsequently died.
This highlights the high sensitivity of juvenile animals of this species to stress.
Additionally, reports exist regarding possible tail autotomy-like responses, comparable to those observed in geckos. No personal observations of this behavior have been made so far.
Conclusion
The species demonstrates a high reproductive potential; however, juvenile development can be sensitive, with considerable variation in hatching success and rearing outcomes.
