Husbandry and Breeding Experience Since 2017
Ahaetulla prasina (Boie, 1827)
Ahaetulla prasina is, in my opinion, one of the most fascinating snake species in the world. Its extremely slender body, large eyes, exceptional camouflage, and unique hunting strategy make it one of the most remarkable arboreal colubrids.
I have been working intensively with this species since 2017. In addition to captive husbandry, my primary focus is the observation of its natural behavior, feeding ecology, and successful captive breeding.
In 2019, I achieved my first successful captive breeding of this species. Since then, I have continued working with both the original breeding animals and their captive-bred offspring.
The information presented on this page is based not only on published literature but also, to a large extent, on my own observations and practical experience gained over many years of keeping and breeding this remarkable species.

Distribution and Habitat
Ahaetulla prasina has an extensive distribution throughout South and Southeast Asia.
The species occurs from lowland forests up to elevations of approximately 1,370 m above sea level.
Adults are predominantly arboreal, inhabiting trees and shrubs, whereas juveniles can occasionally be observed foraging on the ground.
Typical habitats include:
- Tropical rainforests
- Open forests
- Secondary forests
- Shrubland
- Gardens and densely vegetated areas around human settlements
Its slender body shape and green coloration provide excellent camouflage among vegetation.
The distribution range includes, among others:
- Sri Lanka
- India
- China
- Thailand
- Malaysia
- Indonesia
- Numerous islands throughout Southeast Asia
Natural History and Behavior
Ahaetulla prasina is a diurnal, occasionally crepuscular, and strictly arboreal snake.
It is a highly specialized ambush predator. Rather than actively searching for prey, individuals typically remain motionless among branches, waiting for suitable prey to approach.
Its most important sensory adaptation is its exceptional eyesight.
While many snakes rely heavily on chemical cues detected through the vomeronasal (Jacobson's) organ, Ahaetulla prasina depends primarily on vision when hunting.
The species is capable of detecting even the slightest movements and accurately judging prey from considerable distances.
Venom
Ahaetulla prasina is an opisthoglyphous (rear-fanged) colubrid.
Its enlarged grooved fangs are located in the posterior part of the upper jaw.
The venom is primarily used to subdue lizard prey and is generally regarded as being of low medical significance to humans.
Based on my own experience after receiving several bites, I observed no significant symptoms. Nevertheless, these snakes should always be handled with respect, and bites should never be intentionally provoked.

Reproduction
Ahaetulla prasina is ovoviviparous (live-bearing).
Conservation Status
Ahaetulla prasina is currently not listed under any special conservation status.
In Germany, keeping this species is generally not subject to mandatory registration in most federal states.
The species may be kept legally in most German states and is generally not included on state lists of prohibited reptile species. An important exception is Bavaria, where restrictions may apply to the keeping of certain wild animals, including some snake species, depending on their legal classification and the circumstances of keeping.
Before acquiring this species, always check the current regulations in your federal state to ensure that private keeping is permitted and whether registration or additional permits are required.
My Experience Keeping Ahaetulla prasina Since 2017
When I began keeping Ahaetulla prasina in 2017, I was already aware that this species has very different requirements from many of the more commonly kept snakes in herpetoculture.
Many publications describe the Asian Vine Snake as delicate, difficult to maintain, or poorly suited for captivity. Based on my own experience, however, I believe this assessment deserves a more balanced perspective.
While Ahaetulla prasina is certainly not a species for beginners, it can prove to be surprisingly hardy and rewarding when provided with appropriate husbandry conditions.
In my opinion, the greatest challenges are not the basic aspects of keeping the species, but rather understanding its natural biology—particularly its feeding habits, acclimation process, and the creation of a suitable environmental climate.
Acclimation of My Animals
Within a single year, I acquired four specimens from three different sources.
Three of these animals were recently imported wild-caught individuals, while the fourth was an adult yellow female that had already been well established in captivity for approximately two years.
All four snakes adapted remarkably well from the beginning. They readily accepted their preferred prey (lizards), shed without complications, displayed normal daily activity, and remained in excellent condition.
Nevertheless, clear differences became apparent between freshly imported animals and those that had already undergone a longer acclimation period.
Behaviour During the Acclimation Period
Freshly imported Ahaetulla prasina are often extremely sensitive to external disturbances.
My own animals initially displayed pronounced escape behaviour. Whenever they detected movement outside the enclosure, they immediately attempted to flee or sought cover within the vegetation.
Routine maintenance inside the enclosure also triggered defensive responses in some individuals. They elevated the anterior part of the body, displayed threat postures, and attempted to escape with remarkable speed.
Fortunately, this behaviour changed considerably as the animals became acclimated.
After approximately eight to twelve months, all individuals had become noticeably calmer. Escape responses occurred much less frequently, and routine husbandry became significantly easier.
These observations lead me to believe that many negative reports about this species are strongly influenced by the stress associated with recently imported wild-caught specimens.
In my experience, allowing newly acquired animals a quiet acclimation period with as little disturbance as possible is one of the most important factors for long-term success.
Escape Behaviour
One characteristic of Ahaetulla prasina should never be underestimated:
These snakes are exceptionally fast.
Their extremely slender body and outstanding coordination allow them to move through branches with astonishing speed and precision.
Particularly during the initial acclimation period, great care should be taken whenever the enclosure is opened.
My very first Ahaetulla prasina, for example, escaped several times by launching itself out of the enclosure the moment the sliding doors were opened.
Not every individual behaved this way, but freshly imported wild-caught animals should always be considered potential escape artists.
At night, however, the snakes usually remain motionless on branches, relying entirely on their extraordinary camouflage rather than flight.
Daily Activity
Ahaetulla prasina is primarily a diurnal species.
During the night, the snakes usually remain motionless on their preferred resting branches. With the first daylight, however, they become noticeably more active.
Throughout the day they regularly change their position, move to suitable basking sites, carefully observe their surroundings, and react immediately to even the slightest movement.
Their large eyes are among the most distinctive characteristics of this species.
In my opinion, Ahaetulla prasina possesses one of the most remarkable visual systems of any snake I have kept.
Exceptional Vision
The hunting strategy of Ahaetulla prasina differs considerably from that of many other snake species.
Whereas many snakes rely primarily on scent and chemical cues detected through the vomeronasal (Jacobson's) organ, Ahaetulla prasina depends predominantly on vision.
Its eyes allow it to:
- accurately judge distances,
- detect the slightest movement,
- and execute extremely precise strikes.
For this reason, I question some of the commonly repeated husbandry recommendations concerning this species.
For example, it is often suggested that scenting mice with lizard skin can encourage feeding. Based on my own observations, this does not reflect the natural hunting behaviour of Ahaetulla prasina.
These snakes respond primarily to movement and the shape of their prey rather than to scent alone.
Tongue-Flicking Behaviour
Another fascinating observation concerns tongue-flicking behaviour.
Unlike many other snake species, my Ahaetulla prasina use their tongue surprisingly little while hunting.
Instead, the tongue often remains extended for prolonged periods with little or no movement.
I cannot fully explain the exact function of this behaviour. However, my observations suggest that it is not directly associated with the typical scent-based prey detection seen in many other snakes.
Hunting Behaviour – Precision from Ambush
Without question, one of the most fascinating aspects of Ahaetulla prasina is its remarkable hunting strategy.
Inside the terrarium, the snakes often appear to be constantly searching for prey. They move slowly through the branches, change position regularly, and continuously observe their surroundings.
In reality, however, they spend much of their time behaving as classic ambush predators.
Typically, they remain motionless on a branch with the head slightly extended forward, patiently waiting for suitable prey to approach.
Perfect Camouflage as a Hunting Strategy
The movements of Ahaetulla prasina are unlike those of almost any other snake I have observed.
When moving slowly through vegetation, they closely resemble a thin branch swaying gently in the wind.
This combination of
- an extremely slender body,
- slow and deliberate movements,
- excellent camouflage,
- and remarkable patience
makes them almost invisible to potential prey.
Lizards, in particular, often fail to detect the snake until it is far too late.
The Strike
Once suitable prey comes within range, the strike is executed with extraordinary speed and precision.
Most attacks are launched from an elevated position.
The snake usually aims directly at the prey's head or neck.
During the years I have kept this species, I have repeatedly been impressed by the accuracy of these strikes.
One observation stands out in particular: I watched an individual extend nearly 80% of its body length from a branch to seize a basilisk on the ground with perfect accuracy, biting it directly in the neck.
Observations like these demonstrate just how highly specialized Ahaetulla prasina is for hunting among branches and foliage.
In my opinion, it is one of the most precise hunting snakes I have ever worked with.
Subduing Prey
After successfully capturing its prey, Ahaetulla prasina initially maintains a firm grip while making repeated chewing movements.
These movements allow the enlarged rear fangs to penetrate the prey, enabling venom to be delivered effectively.
Ahaetulla prasina is an opisthoglyphous (rear-fanged) colubrid.
The enlarged grooved fangs are located in the posterior part of the upper jaw, approximately beneath the eyes.
The venom is primarily adapted to rapidly immobilize lizard prey.
Its exact composition and effectiveness may vary between populations and individuals, and many aspects of its biological activity remain insufficiently studied.
Based on my own observations, smaller lizards are affected relatively quickly after envenomation, whereas larger prey may remain active for a considerably longer period.
Nevertheless, the snakes frequently begin swallowing their prey before the venom has taken full effect.
My Personal Experience with Bites
Over the years, I have been bitten by Ahaetulla prasina on several occasions.
In my case, none of these bites resulted in any noticeable symptoms or medical complications.
It is important to emphasize, however, that I have never intentionally provoked defensive bites or deliberately handled these snakes in a manner that would increase the likelihood of being bitten.
Occasionally, photographs can be found online showing keepers handling several Ahaetulla simultaneously or allowing the animals to move freely across their hands.
Personally, I see little benefit in this type of handling.
I believe that calm, respectful interaction with these snakes is both safer and less stressful for the animals.
When performing enclosure maintenance or transferring specimens, there is absolutely nothing wrong with wearing protective gloves.
Handling and Removing the Animals
Not every Ahaetulla prasina can be handled reliably with a snake hook.
For example, three of my four animals rarely remain calmly on the hook for any length of time.
Whenever necessary, I therefore use protective gloves and carefully remove the animals by hand.
It should always be remembered that, despite their delicate appearance, Ahaetulla prasina is a highly specialized rear-fanged snake capable of extremely rapid movements.
Their speed and agility should never be underestimated.
Summary of Their Hunting Behaviour
For me, the hunting behaviour of Ahaetulla prasina is one of the main reasons why this species is so fascinating.
It combines:
- exceptional vision,
- outstanding camouflage,
- slow and highly controlled movements,
- remarkable striking accuracy,
- and extraordinary adaptations for hunting lizards in dense vegetation.
Anyone keeping this species should not focus solely on routine husbandry.
Taking the time to observe its natural behaviour is equally important, as these observations reveal what truly makes this snake so unique.
Individual or Group Housing?
At the beginning of my experience with Ahaetulla prasina, I housed two males together because I initially believed they might form a compatible pair.
In principle, keeping multiple individuals together is possible. In a sufficiently large, well-structured enclosure, cohabitation may function successfully under certain circumstances.
Based on my own experience, however, I now view group housing with caution.
The primary concern for me is the ability to accurately monitor each individual's food intake.
Problems Associated with Group Housing
During group feeding, I observed clear differences in hunting success between the two males.
One animal consistently captured prey and maintained excellent body condition, while monitoring the actual food intake of the second individual proved considerably more difficult.
With specialized lizard-eating snakes, I consider careful monitoring of feeding behaviour to be essential.
It is important to ensure that every individual receives sufficient food and that no animal is consistently disadvantaged.
In addition, I observed aggressive interactions between my animals on two occasions during feeding.
These incidents ultimately convinced me to house all of my Ahaetulla prasina individually.
Risks of Intraspecific Conflicts
Although Ahaetulla prasina is generally regarded as a calm and peaceful species, it should never be forgotten that these snakes are opportunistic predators.
They detect prey primarily through movement and react with astonishing speed.
When multiple animals are housed together, there is always a possibility that smaller or weaker individuals could be perceived as potential prey.
I have also seen reports and photographs of larger specimens actively pursuing smaller conspecifics.
Whether this behaviour is common is difficult to assess, but in my opinion it demonstrates that the risk should not be ignored.
For this reason, I personally prefer housing Ahaetulla prasina individually.
Individual housing offers several important advantages:
- reliable monitoring of food intake,
- close observation of each individual,
- reduced stress,
- and better control of each animal's overall health and condition.
Climate Simulation and Natural Conditions
When keeping my Ahaetulla prasina, I try to replicate the natural environmental conditions of their native habitat as closely as possible.
Rather than maintaining completely constant parameters, I aim to reproduce the natural fluctuations these snakes experience in the wild.
Particular attention is given to:
- day and night temperature differences,
- changing humidity levels,
- seasonal rainfall,
- and adequate air circulation.
Ahaetulla prasina inhabits tropical regions of Southeast Asia, where environmental conditions naturally vary throughout the day and across the seasons.
Temperature
During the day, temperatures gradually increase to approximately 30°C (86°F).
My average environmental temperatures are:
- 28–29°C (82–84°F) during the day
- 21–23°C (70–73°F) at night
I consider this nighttime temperature drop to be an essential component of successful husbandry.
It provides the snakes with a natural daily rhythm while preventing prolonged exposure to excessively high temperatures.
The photoperiod is maintained at approximately 12 hours of light per day.
Stimulating Reproduction Through Climate Simulation
Simulating natural environmental conditions produced very interesting results in my breeding group.
After introducing a male to a female at the beginning of June, I observed the first courtship behaviour after only about one week.
During the following month, I documented a total of five successful copulations.
Individual mating events were typically separated by intervals of four to five days.
After this period, no further reproductive activity was observed.
One particularly interesting observation was that the male continued feeding normally throughout the entire breeding period.
Many snake species show a noticeable reduction in food intake during reproduction, but I have never observed this behaviour in my Ahaetulla prasina.
Humidity and Misting
Depending on the time of day and the season, I maintain relative humidity between 60% and 90%.
Humidity is provided through both manual spraying and an automatic misting system.
During the simulated rainy season, the enclosure is misted:
- two to three times daily,
- using varying intervals.
Outside this period, the enclosure is lightly misted once each day.
In my opinion, maintaining high humidity alone is not sufficient.
The key is achieving the right balance between humidity and effective ventilation.
A permanently wet enclosure with inadequate air exchange can quickly become problematic.
Although Ahaetulla prasina inhabits humid tropical forests, these environments are not characterized by constantly waterlogged conditions.
Drinking Behaviour
It is often stated that Ahaetulla prasina drinks only moving water.
My own observations do not support this assumption.
I have provided several water sources, including:
- water bowls on the ground,
- elevated water bowls among the branches,
- and flowing water features.
Despite these options, I have never observed deliberate drinking from any of these sources.
What I regularly observe instead is the snakes drinking water droplets from leaves and branches immediately after misting.
Based on my experience, this species appears to obtain most of its water from droplets deposited on vegetation rather than from standing water.
Nevertheless, I continue to provide fresh water at all times.
As with many husbandry observations, my experiences apply only to my own animals, and other keepers may report different results.
Enclosure, Equipment, and Interior Design
Proper enclosure design is one of the most important aspects of keeping Ahaetulla prasina successfully.
This species spends almost its entire life among vegetation and makes full use of the available three-dimensional space.
An appropriate enclosure should therefore not only provide sufficient size but, more importantly, numerous climbing structures and secure retreat areas.
When designing an enclosure, I prioritize functionality over appearance.
The snake should always be able to move safely, select suitable resting sites, and display its full range of natural behaviours.
Enclosure Size and Construction
My enclosures are constructed from 12 mm black PVC panels.
Current enclosure sizes range from:
- 90 × 60 × 60 cm
- 120 × 60 × 60 cm
For exceptionally large specimens reaching lengths of up to 200 cm, I would recommend considerably larger enclosures.
Although Ahaetulla prasina has a very slender body and therefore requires less floor space than many heavy-bodied snakes, its activity level should never be underestimated.
These snakes make extensive use of the vertical space and regularly move throughout the entire enclosure.
Ventilation and Air Circulation
One of the most important aspects of keeping tropical species is achieving the proper balance between high humidity and adequate ventilation.
For this reason, my enclosures incorporate adjustable ventilation systems that allow environmental conditions to be modified throughout the year.
In addition, each enclosure is equipped with small circulation fans to improve air movement.
Good airflow becomes especially important under humid conditions, as stagnant, moisture-laden air can eventually lead to husbandry problems.
Lighting
Each enclosure is illuminated using a 24-watt T5 fluorescent tube providing both UVA and UVB radiation.
The importance of ultraviolet lighting for Ahaetulla prasina remains a subject of discussion among keepers.
In my opinion, however, these snakes clearly benefit from high-quality lighting.
This is likely due not only to possible physiological benefits but also to the fact that this species relies heavily on vision.
Bright, natural lighting allows the snakes to perceive their surroundings more effectively and supports their normal daily activity.
I do not use any additional lighting systems.
Heating
Heating is provided by overhead radiant heat panels.
In my opinion, this method more closely reflects the natural thermal environment experienced by arboreal snakes than heat supplied from below.
Ahaetulla prasina frequently rests on exposed branches and naturally selects warmer areas in the upper parts of the enclosure.
All technical equipment—including thermostats, timers, and automatic control systems—is carefully regulated to maintain stable temperatures and consistent lighting schedules.
Interior Structure
One of the most important components of an Ahaetulla prasina enclosure is the availability of numerous suitable climbing branches.
I use many thin branches of varying diameters.
These provide the snakes with:
- natural pathways for movement,
- secure resting sites,
- elevated ambush positions,
- and numerous hiding opportunities.
Horizontal branches are particularly important, allowing the snakes to rest comfortably.
They should never be forced to spend most of their time clinging to enclosure walls or using only a few main branches.
Planting
In my opinion, dense vegetation is an essential component of a successful enclosure.
It provides:
- security,
- visual barriers,
- additional climbing opportunities,
- and a much more natural environment.
With appropriate lighting, live plants can easily be incorporated.
Suitable choices include:
- Ficus species,
- ferns,
- and other tropical plants with similar environmental requirements.
Live plants also contribute to a more stable microclimate within the enclosure.
Substrate
I use a humus-based substrate.
Although substrate plays a less important role for an almost entirely arboreal species than it does for terrestrial snakes, it still contributes significantly to the overall enclosure climate.
The substrate should retain moisture while allowing excess water to evaporate, avoiding permanently wet conditions.
Misting System
The misting system forms an integral part of my overall climate management.
Ahaetulla prasina originates from regions with pronounced rainy seasons, and alternating periods of humidity allow these natural conditions to be replicated more realistically.
In my experience, the highest possible humidity is not the objective.
Far more important is maintaining a healthy cycle of humid and drier periods.
My Experience with Enclosure Technology
After many years of keeping this species, I have concluded that the technical aspects of husbandry are not the greatest challenge.
With modern equipment, creating suitable environmental conditions is relatively straightforward.
The true challenge remains feeding.
When temperature, humidity, enclosure design, and lighting are appropriate, Ahaetulla prasina displays exceptionally natural and fascinating behaviour.
Providing a reliable supply of suitable prey animals, however, remains the aspect of husbandry where many keepers ultimately struggle.
Feeding – The Key to Successfully Keeping Ahaetulla prasina
If there is one aspect that ultimately determines success or failure when keeping Ahaetulla prasina, it is undoubtedly nutrition.
Most other aspects of husbandry can be managed effectively through proper equipment, experience, and careful planning.
Providing an appropriate diet, however, remains the greatest challenge.
Ahaetulla prasina is a highly specialized lizard-eating snake.
Anyone choosing to keep this species must accept that its natural diet cannot simply be replaced by a more convenient alternative.
Specialists Among Snakes
For me, dietary specialists are among the most fascinating reptiles.
Their unique body shape and behaviour often reflect a highly specialized ecological niche.
As my interest in rear-fanged colubrids and lizard-eating snakes has grown over the years, these remarkable species have become the primary focus of my work.
Alongside Ahaetulla prasina, several other specialized lizard hunters rank among my favourite snake species.
Their appeal lies in the fact that successful husbandry requires far more than simply feeding mice on a regular schedule.
It requires a genuine understanding of the species' natural biology and ecological adaptations.
Natural Diet
In the wild, Ahaetulla prasina feeds primarily on:
- lizards,
- geckos,
- small agamid lizards,
- and occasionally frogs.
The entire anatomy and hunting strategy of this species is perfectly adapted for capturing these prey animals.
From its exceptional eyesight to its remarkably slender head, every aspect of its morphology reflects a specialization for hunting agile, elongated prey within dense vegetation.
Nutritional Comparison of Different Prey Animals
A comparison of the nutritional composition of common feeder rodents and the natural prey of Ahaetulla prasina reveals significant differences.
The contrast is striking.
Compared with rodents, lizards and frogs generally contain:
- higher calcium levels,
- a more favourable calcium-to-phosphorus ratio,
- a higher protein content,
- and significantly lower fat levels.
Overall, this nutritional profile corresponds much more closely to the natural dietary requirements of Ahaetulla prasina.

Interpretation
The nutritional composition of lizards and amphibians differs substantially from that of rodents. In general, natural prey species provide:
- considerably higher calcium levels,
- a more favourable calcium-to-phosphorus ratio,
- high protein content,
- and significantly lower fat levels.
These characteristics more closely reflect the natural diet of Ahaetulla prasina and may help explain why many individuals are reluctant to accept rodents as a primary food source.
Note: Nutritional values may vary depending on species, age, body condition, and the analytical methods used. The data presented here are intended as a general comparison of natural prey versus commonly used rodent feeders.
Why Rodents May Be Problematic
Many keepers attempt to transition lizard-eating snakes to a diet of mice or rats.
In some individual cases, this may be successful.
Nevertheless, it is important to recognize that rodents are not the natural prey of Ahaetulla prasina.
In my opinion, a long-term rodent-based diet has the potential to cause nutritional imbalances.
Possible consequences include:
- excessive fat accumulation,
- an unbalanced nutrient intake,
- and long-term health problems.
Likewise, supplementing rodents with vitamins and minerals does not automatically create a species-appropriate diet.
Excessive supplementation may itself have negative consequences.
My Own Attempts with Alternative Food Items
To reduce my dependence on the availability of live lizards, I experimented with several alternative food items for my four Ahaetulla prasina.
The snakes originated from different sources and varied considerably in age and size.
I tested:
- fish,
- frogs,
- earthworms,
- dead lizards,
- and rodents.
The results were disappointing.
None of my animals accepted these alternatives consistently.
Even freshly killed lizards were completely rejected.
The prey had to be alive and moving.
The Importance of Movement
This observation fits perfectly with the hunting strategy of Ahaetulla prasina.
These snakes rely primarily on vision when hunting.
Their feeding response is triggered mainly by:
- movement,
- body shape,
- and natural locomotion.
Scent alone appears to play only a minor role in initiating predatory behaviour.
I even attempted to imitate movement and breathing in dead lizards.
However, even the slightest unnatural movement proved counterproductive.
The snakes quickly focused on the forceps or tubing used to manipulate the prey rather than on the prey item itself.
A live lizard, by contrast, is usually recognized immediately and reliably triggers the natural hunting response.
Food Intake and Metabolism
A common misconception is that a single lizard per week is sufficient for Ahaetulla prasina.
Based on my observations, this is clearly not the case.
This species has a relatively fast metabolism.
Appropriately sized lizards are often digested within only a few days.
For example, I observed one adult male consume three house geckos (Hemidactylus) and resume active food-searching behaviour only a few days later.
In my experience, this reflects a considerably higher food requirement than many keepers initially assume.
My Feeding Recommendations
For an adult male, which usually remains smaller and reaches approximately 120–150 cm (4–5 ft) in length, I generally recommend:
- approximately three to six appropriately sized geckos per week
or alternatively,
- a smaller number of larger lizards of suitable size.
Adult females require proportionally larger food quantities.
They grow significantly larger, develop a more robust body, and are capable of handling considerably larger prey.
The largest prey item I have observed being consumed was a six-month-old basilisk lizard.
Large females are therefore capable of consuming surprisingly substantial prey.
Feeder Production – The Reality Behind Keeping This Species
Feeding is undoubtedly the aspect that distinguishes Ahaetulla prasina most clearly from many other snake species.
Anyone choosing to keep this snake must understand that it is not only the snake itself that requires care.
Successful long-term husbandry often depends on maintaining an entire support system consisting of feeder breeding colonies, insect cultures, reliable suppliers, and contacts with other keepers.
In my experience, keeping Ahaetulla prasina means becoming not only a snake keeper, but also—to a considerable extent—a lizard breeder.
The True Cost of Feeding
At first glance, Ahaetulla prasina appears to be an inexpensive species.
The purchase price is often considerably lower than that of many other specialized snakes.
The ongoing feeding costs, however, can present a very different picture.
A single snake requires a substantial number of suitable lizards over the course of a year.
Depending on prey availability, breeding success, and local prices, annual feeding expenses can easily amount to several hundred euros.
With multiple animals, these costs increase accordingly.
My Experience with Feeder Numbers
During 2017, I required approximately:
- 80 basilisk lizards
- 450 geckos
to maintain my collection.
These numbers illustrate the scale that feeder production can reach.
Many keepers underestimate this aspect when first becoming interested in specialized lizard-eating snakes.
A snake purchased for only a modest price may ultimately become far more expensive than expected due to its long-term feeding requirements.
Why Breeding Your Own Feeders Becomes Almost Essential
As demand for suitable feeder lizards continues to increase, obtaining a reliable supply has become increasingly difficult.
During my visits to the Hamm Reptile Expo, I have noticed that more and more keepers actively search for geckos and other suitable feeder lizards.
Without reserving animals in advance, obtaining larger numbers can be challenging.
Availability also fluctuates considerably.
At times, suitable feeder animals are plentiful; at others, they are extremely scarce.
For this reason, I consider maintaining a personal feeder breeding colony to be an invaluable part of keeping this species successfully.
Basilisk Lizards as Feeder Animals
One of the feeder species I have bred extensively is the basilisk.
Their greatest advantage is their remarkable reproductive capacity.
Under optimal conditions, even a relatively small breeding colony can produce a considerable number of offspring.
With two breeding groups, I was able to produce approximately 120 hatchlings during particularly successful years.
Naturally, breeding results vary.
A productive season does not guarantee that the following year will be equally successful.
Breeding Geckos
Geckos also play an important role in my feeder production.
House geckos (Hemidactylus spp.) are especially useful because they remain relatively small and are readily accepted by many Ahaetulla prasina.
However, their reproductive potential should not be overestimated.
Although many geckos lay eggs regularly, this does not automatically translate into large numbers of usable offspring.
Despite maintaining several hundred house geckos, my actual production of feeder-sized juveniles was considerably lower than initially expected.
Many other gecko species likewise produce only a few eggs per clutch.
Successful feeder breeding therefore requires patience, experience, and realistic expectations.
Feeder Breeding Is Never Completely Predictable
One important lesson I have learned is that even a well-established breeding colony can fail.
Temperature, humidity, disease, and natural biological variation can all have a significant impact on productivity.
For this reason, I strongly recommend never relying on a single source of feeder animals.
In my opinion, a secure long-term feeding strategy should combine several components:
- your own feeder breeding colonies,
- contacts with other breeders,
- occasional purchases,
- maintaining reserve animals,
- and flexible long-term planning.
The Second Level – Insect Production
Anyone breeding lizards for Ahaetulla prasina will inevitably require large quantities of feeder insects.
The feeder chain does not end with the lizards.
Their diet must also be taken into account.
For this reason, I maintain breeding colonies of:
- Blaptica dubia (Argentine wood cockroaches)
and keep large reserve populations throughout the year.
During peak periods—when raising large numbers of juvenile basilisks or several hundred geckos—even a substantial cockroach colony may no longer be sufficient.
At such times, additional feeder insects such as:
- crickets,
- mealworms,
- and other commercially available feeder insects
must also be purchased.
Wild-Caught Geckos as Feeder Animals
The use of wild-caught geckos as feeder animals remains a controversial subject.
Naturally, removing animals from the wild is an issue that deserves careful consideration.
At the same time, however, it is important to acknowledge the practical reality:
Many highly specialized lizard-eating snakes still cannot be reliably maintained on captive-bred prey alone.
When wild-caught feeder animals are used, responsible management is essential.
This includes:
- an appropriate quarantine period,
- careful observation,
- strict hygiene,
- parasite screening,
- and excluding animals that show obvious signs of disease or poor condition.
Whenever possible, I keep wild-caught geckos for an extended period before using them as feeders or distributing them to other keepers.
Despite all precautions, occasional losses should always be expected.
Why Husbandry Often Fails
In my opinion, many unsuccessful attempts to keep Ahaetulla prasina result from unrealistic expectations rather than from the species itself.
The most common mistakes include:
- attempting to convert the snakes permanently to a rodent-based diet,
- providing an insufficient supply of suitable feeder lizards,
- underestimating the importance of feeder breeding,
- and lacking patience during the acclimation period.
Ahaetulla prasina should not be expected to adapt to our preferred methods of keeping reptiles.
Instead, the keeper must adapt to the biological requirements of the species.
Conclusion – Feeding Ahaetulla prasina
Anyone wishing to keep Ahaetulla prasina successfully should be prepared to:
- invest time in breeding feeder animals,
- allocate space for additional enclosures,
- build a network of reliable contacts within the reptile community,
- maintain a consistent supply of suitable lizard prey,
- and accept the species' highly specialized natural diet.
The challenge is considerable—but it is precisely this remarkable specialization that makes Ahaetulla prasina such a fascinating species to keep and study.
Breeding and Raising Ahaetulla prasina
For me, breeding Ahaetulla prasina has been one of the most fascinating aspects of keeping this remarkable species.
Although this snake is widely distributed throughout its natural range, relatively few detailed accounts of successful captive breeding have been published.
With highly specialized species such as this, personal observations are particularly valuable, as many aspects of their behaviour, reproductive biology, gestation, and juvenile development remain only partially documented.
From the very beginning, my goal was not simply to keep these snakes, but to understand them as thoroughly as possible and to recreate their natural life cycle under captive conditions.
Preparing for Breeding
Successful reproduction begins long before the animals actually mate.
In my experience, the following factors are essential:
- healthy, well-conditioned breeding animals,
- stable husbandry conditions,
- adequate periods of rest,
- natural seasonal fluctuations,
- and optimal nutritional support throughout the reproductive cycle.
The physical condition of the female is especially important.
Producing offspring places considerable demands on the body, and females should not be conditioned only after becoming gravid. Instead, they should already possess sufficient energy reserves before reproduction begins.
Courtship and Mating Behaviour
When breeding Ahaetulla prasina, I attempt to simulate the seasonal conditions of Southeast Asia.
By introducing gradual changes in temperature and humidity, I aim to reproduce the environmental cues that may naturally trigger reproduction in the wild.
After introducing a male to a female at the beginning of June, I observed the first courtship behaviour after approximately one week.
Over the course of the following month, I documented five successful copulations.
Individual mating events occurred at intervals of approximately four to five days.
Afterwards, no further reproductive activity was observed.
An Interesting Observation During the Breeding Season
One particularly noteworthy observation was that the male continued feeding normally throughout the entire breeding period.
In many snake species, males reduce their food intake considerably—or stop feeding altogether—during the reproductive season.
I never observed this behaviour in my Ahaetulla prasina.
This once again demonstrates that every species possesses its own biological characteristics, and that husbandry experience gained with other snakes cannot always be applied directly to this species.
Gestation and Embryonic Development
Ahaetulla prasina is ovoviviparous, meaning that the eggs remain inside the female's body throughout their development.
The young are therefore born alive rather than hatching from externally deposited eggs.
During gestation, I observed several characteristic changes, including:
- a gradual increase in body girth,
- reduced activity,
- changes in resting posture,
- and generally more cautious behaviour.
During this period, unnecessary disturbance should be avoided whenever possible.
In my experience, maintaining a calm environment and stable husbandry conditions is particularly important for gravid females.
The Birth of My First Captive-Bred Offspring
My first successful captive breeding of Ahaetulla prasina was achieved in 2019.
After a gestation period of approximately 172 days, the female gave birth to four healthy offspring.
Witnessing this birth was an unforgettable moment.
With such a highly specialized species, every successful breeding event represents an important milestone—not only for the individual keeper, but also for our collective understanding of its biology.
The First Days of the Neonates
Only a short time after birth, the neonates already displayed the characteristic features of the species.
They were:
- highly active,
- excellent climbers,
- extremely responsive to movement,
- and remarkably efficient visual hunters.
It was fascinating to observe that many behaviours were clearly innate rather than learned.
Their characteristic hunting strategy—slowly approaching prey, carefully focusing on the target, and delivering a highly precise strike—was already fully recognizable in these young snakes.
Feeding the Neonates
Raising juvenile Ahaetulla prasina presents challenges similar to those encountered with adult animals.
Even as neonates, they remain highly specialized lizard predators.
Providing appropriately sized live lizards is therefore the single most important factor for successful rearing.
As with the adults, I found that prey movement is essential.
The feeding response is not triggered primarily by scent but by the characteristic movements of living lizards.
Interestingly, my neonates accepted food even before their first shed.
Growth and Development
With appropriate care and a consistent supply of suitable prey, the juveniles developed steadily.
One particularly fascinating aspect was the gradual development of their coloration.
In Ahaetulla prasina, the definitive adult colour often becomes fully apparent only as the animals mature.
Juveniles may therefore undergo significant colour changes during growth.
Observed colour morphs include:
- the classic green form,
- yellowish individuals,
- bluish variants,
- and numerous intermediate colour combinations.
Watching these colour changes develop is one of the most rewarding aspects of raising this species.
The Importance of Captive Breeding
For me, captive breeding has a value that extends far beyond producing offspring.
Every successful generation represents:
- reduced dependence on wild-caught animals,
- improved knowledge of the species,
- healthier and more established captive populations,
- and valuable experience for future keepers and breeders.
Especially with highly specialized reptiles, knowledge is the most important resource.
Only by sharing our observations and experiences can husbandry continue to improve.
Personal Reflections, Colour Variations, and My Conclusions After Several Years with Ahaetulla prasina
After several years of keeping and breeding Ahaetulla prasina, my perception of this species has changed considerably.
When I first began working with these snakes in 2017, many aspects of their husbandry remained uncertain.
Much of the available information was contradictory, and many reports were based either on short-term experience or on observations of newly imported wild-caught specimens.
Only through years of observing my own animals was I able to develop what I believe is a far more realistic understanding of this species.
Today, I no longer consider Ahaetulla prasina to be a "difficult snake."
Instead, I regard it as a highly specialized species with very specific biological requirements.
Individual Temperament
One of the most fascinating aspects of keeping Ahaetulla prasina has been discovering how different individual animals can be.
Although they all belong to the same species, every snake possesses its own distinct temperament.
Some individuals are initially extremely shy.
They immediately flee,
- disappear into dense vegetation,
- and react nervously to even minor movements outside the enclosure.
Others are noticeably calmer and adapt to the presence of the keeper much more quickly.
Over time, however, I observed behavioural changes in all of my animals.
Many snakes that were initially extremely nervous gradually became much more relaxed after several months.
In my opinion, this explains why many negative reports about Ahaetulla prasina originate from observations made shortly after importation and do not necessarily reflect the behaviour of well-acclimated captive animals.
Colour Variations in Ahaetulla prasina
Another fascinating characteristic of Ahaetulla prasina is its remarkable diversity in coloration.
The species is most commonly recognized as the classic green vine snake, and green is indeed the predominant colour in wild populations.
However, a surprising variety of colour forms exists, including:
- vibrant green individuals,
- yellow specimens,
- turquoise forms,
- bluish variants,
- silver-coloured individuals,
- and even orange morphs.
Noticeable colour differences may occur even among animals originating from the same population.
Among my own collection, I keep yellow, blue, and almost silver individuals whose appearance differs considerably from the typical green form.
The colour development of juveniles is particularly fascinating, as their final adult coloration often changes significantly during growth and maturation.
Observations on Perception and Behaviour
One characteristic that has impressed me throughout the years is the extraordinary awareness Ahaetulla prasina displays toward its surroundings.
These snakes often appear noticeably more attentive than many other species I have worked with.
They carefully track movements outside the enclosure and respond selectively to changes in their environment.
Their exceptional eyesight sometimes creates the impression that they are actively analysing everything around them.
Of course, such observations should not be interpreted in anthropomorphic terms.
Nevertheless, the strong visual orientation of this species is unmistakable and distinguishes it from many other snakes.
What Makes This Species So Unique
For me, the fascination of Ahaetulla prasina extends far beyond its elegant appearance.
Many snakes possess beautiful colours or striking patterns.
What truly sets this species apart is the combination of several remarkable characteristics:
- an extremely specialized body design,
- perfect adaptation to an arboreal lifestyle,
- a unique hunting strategy,
- exceptional visual capabilities,
- and the demanding requirements of its highly specialized diet.
Ahaetulla prasina is not a snake that can simply be "owned."
It is a species that must first be understood.
What This Species Has Taught Me
Keeping Ahaetulla prasina has once again reminded me how important it is to respect the biology of the animals we keep.
Too often, we try to adapt animals to our own expectations.
With highly specialized species, this approach rarely succeeds.
A far better philosophy is to adapt our husbandry to meet the biological requirements of the animal.
This principle becomes particularly evident when it comes to feeding.
A lizard-eating snake will always remain a lizard-eating snake.
The challenge is not to persuade it to accept a more convenient prey item, but to provide the natural diet to which it has evolved over millions of years.
The Future of My Work with Ahaetulla prasina
Even after several years, there is still much about Ahaetulla prasina that continues to inspire my curiosity.
My future goals include:
- gaining further experience through captive breeding,
- documenting colour development,
- observing behavioural changes across multiple generations,
- and sharing my knowledge of this remarkable species with other keepers.
Every new observation contributes to a better understanding of the species.
Especially when working with highly specialized reptiles, there is no substitute for long-term personal experience.
Final Thoughts
Ahaetulla prasina is certainly not a beginner's snake.
Keeping this species successfully requires:
- a willingness to invest significant time and dedication,
- an understanding of its specialized dietary requirements,
- patience and careful observation,
- and the commitment to go beyond conventional snake husbandry.
Those who are prepared to meet these demands will be rewarded with one of the most fascinating snakes in the world.
